October in Michigan

“Even if something is left undone, everyone must take the time to sit and watch the leaves turn.” – Elizabeth LawrenceBeyond my excitement to fly to Michigan for the birth of our potential princess, I was also delighted to have a chance to visit Ann Arbor in the fall. Lee attended the University of Michigan his freshman year and it is also where my sister, Annie, received her Doctorate and my brother-in-law, Jon, his Master’s. They have all told me about how beautiful Michigan is in the fall and I have always said that if I visited the state I would want to go in October to see the leaves changing. It was a little bit of a dream come true!

So in between hospital visits and the general unknown of the adoption, Lee would whisk me out of Detroit and drive me to Ann Arbor and it’s neighboring cities for sight seeing and good eats. It was so beautiful. I definitely recommend that everyone take a trip to Michigan in the fall. Annie sent me a long list of “must-sees” and I stuck to the list religiously. We visited an apple cider farm, the beautiful University of Michigan campus, and quite a few famous mom & pop shops. Jenny’s Farm Stand was my favorite. We ate just-made pumpkin cider doughnuts with fresh hot apple cider and got to hold little goats dressed in Halloween sweaters. While walking around U of M campus, we talked about our college years and what we experienced and learned. It was such a great escape. The only problem was that every time we would go somewhere new we would look at each other and say, “Oh, I wish the kids were here!” or “The kids would have loved this!” Next time, we will definitely bring them!
