I just wanted to let everyone in on the loop of what is going on with my dear husband’s ojitos. Thanks for all the calls and love!!! Lee’s left eye is blind due to an aggressive acanthamoeba – a parasite that infects the eye. Basically, this little parasite lives in our tap water and can hitch a ride on a contact lens, then invade a vulnerable eye and destroy the cornea in a very painful manner. This is what is happening to Lee. His sight in his eye will not return, but he will get a cornea transplant as soon as the eye is healthy enough and then he will be able to see. Most likely we will need to treat the eye for eight to twelve months and then get the transplant. This is a marathon – not a sprint. We are now working with a team of doctors at UT Southwestern. Lee is off the hourly around the clock treatments to my great relief and now down nine treatments per day. It’s funny because none of the medicines equipped to handle this kind of thing are FDA approved so we are having medicines shipped from New Zealand. Basically he puts a lot of pool cleaner in his eye every hour. It’s pretty thorough and not fun, but Lee is an incredible trooper. He knows we have to keep our eye on it (pun completely intended – I cannot help myself). He is returning to work this week despite his mother’s wishes, but no one has ever been able to keep my husband from work too long. He loves the feeling of a hard day’s work…even if he is in a lot of pain during it I guess. To Lee (and his I’m suspecting his coworkers) chagrin, although he has put multiple requests in for an eye patch, the doctors refuse to let him wear one while the parasite is still on the prowl. Perhaps, he will get his wish by Christmas. I think it will be neat because then I’ll be the wife of “that guy with the eye patch.”
UPDATE: Lee is doing fabulously and will be seeing fine out of both eyes quickly!
